John Chiara captures with his handcrafted 127 x 76cm camera obscura the soaring verticality of the valley’s mountainous terrain with the clarity that comes from shooting directly onto large sheets of photographic paper. Driving the camera around the valley in the bed of a pickup truck, the primeval and visceral qualities of the Engadin come into focus. There is a pulse coming from above and below: how the rivers course with a deafening power; how deep in the Alps, the mountains shed mineral tears that flow like cascading bands of cement.
