Lieven De Boeck’s practice touches upon many areas of contemporary art, whether they are conceived as a set of passive categories like process art, the monochrome, minimal art, conceptual art, political art, environmental art, body art, participation and performance or as burning and contested issues; the status of the object as communication or consumer identity; notions of authorship and the relations of artist to audience, questions of identity, sexuality, decolonization and cultural difference, the relationship between art and life. De Boeck see all these areas and issues as interconnected but within the specific frame of reference of giving a central place to the belief in the creative mind of the viewer. His work can be seen as research about language and space, from literature, art, architecture and urbanism to the relation with different strategies of organizing, distributing and handling information.
