Aletta De Jong

1967*, Rotterdam

My work uses the collecting and processing of raw materials and minerals found in specific surroundings as a way to investigate the historical, current and potential interaction between people and their living environment. In projects that enable diverse and innovative forms of urban agriculture and survival, I have become especially interested in plants grown in the urban context that are suitable for human use (medicine, food, tools, etc.). Recent projects have also focused more on non-urban landscapes as a resource for human needs, and other matter liker minerals. As such, my work moves between nature in the city, the impact of humans on the landscape, and the influence of the landscape on humans. The work often takes opposing forces — attractions and aversions, obstacles and potential, waste and recycled materials, threats and protection, the mechanical and natural — as a means to understand and intervene in contemporary situations and scenarios.
